Process Edge vs Information Edge Myth

Process edge vs information edge: why SEC insider cases are not a journaling lesson, and how past-tense ConvexClub logs separate learning from MNPI myths.

Short answer: Process edge vs information edge is a false compliment when "information" means material nonpublic information. Illegal MNPI is not an edge ConvexClub wants near the product. Process edge here means documented, past-tense learning about budget, horizon, and decisions you actually lived—inspectable by a skeptical peer, not a tip.

On 12 March 2024, the SEC announced charges in a Tallgrass-related insider trading matter and reported more than $2.2 million in aggregate remedies. In a separate 2024 action involving former Cisco executive Andreas Bechtolsheim, the SEC described $415,726 in illicit profits and a $923,740 civil penalty in its press materials. An earlier 2023 Coinbase-related case (SEC press 2023-98, Wahi) again sits in the public record as crypto-adjacent MNPI enforcement, not as a "how traders win" story.

Those releases exist because trading on MNPI is a legal problem, not a journaling lesson. We cite them as a boundary: do not launder forbidden information into "asymmetric edge" language on or off our site.

What people mean by "information edge"

In lounge talk, information edge can mean anything from reading a 10-K carefully to knowing a friend at a company. That blur is dangerous. Diligent public research, when truly public, is not the same object as MNPI. ConvexClub will not help you cosplay the second as the first.

If your chat culture treats leaky rumors as craft, you are training risk we want zero of. Tip obedience already compounds bad process—tip groups vs process journals—and MNPI fantasies compound legal risk on top.

What we mean by process edge

Process edge, in our narrow product sense, is boring:

  • You wrote constraints before outcomes were knowable.
  • You sized with lived capital at risk, not vibes.
  • You stated a horizon and noticed when you broke it.
  • You recorded failures without renaming them strategy.
  • You can show a peer the packet without inventing a prophet story.

That is closer to aviation checklists than to "I knew a guy." Field guide: five factors. Identity: asymmetric risk is not day trading. Own-history framing: own history beats generic backtests.

We still do not claim process edges raise expected market returns. We claim undocumented myth-making makes learning fake.

What you should do with SEC cases as a reader

Read them as enforcement narratives and as reminders that "edge" language is contested and regulated. Do not scrape them for playbooks. Do not journal MNPI. If a past experience involved a compliance review, tip line, or legal cloud, write only what counsel and facts allow—and prefer silence over clever fields when unsure.

ConvexClub is software for structured past experiences and process discussion. Not custody. Not advice. Not a whistleblower platform. Not a place to store tips.

How "edge" talk shows up in Seed Hunter chats

We keep hearing soft versions that never mention MNPI by name: "my group sees things early," "someone close to the company said," "the channel called it before the press." Even when those sentences are idle swagger, they train the wrong prize function. People start optimizing for proximity theater instead of constraint quality.

A process-first rewrite sounds flatter: "I sized $X on public filing Y, horizon H, monetization M; outcome O; lesson L." If the sentence needs a mysterious someone to remain interesting, it is not ready for our form. Past-tense craft for noisy event weeks also shows up in why past tense beats live calls.

Dollar figures from SEC press materials—more than $2.2 million aggregate remedies in the Tallgrass-related announcement dated 12 March 2024; illicit profits and civil penalty amounts in the Bechtolsheim release—are here to make the boundary vivid, not to invite mimicry.

Try this yourself

Sign up and log one closed experience where you once overclaimed "edge." Strip the myth. Keep budget, horizon, monetization, outcome, and a lesson you could defend without any private corporate fact. Past tense only. If the honest lesson is "I confused rumor for research," write that.

Frequently asked questions

Is careful public research "information edge"?

It can be diligence. It is still not a license to invent certainty, and it is not MNPI. Separate public filings from chat gossip in your notes. Catalyst noise: catalyst calendar vs experience journal.

Can Circles discuss tickers?

When Circles open, they are for process over logged past experiences—not recommendations, not rumor desks. Product posture matches first experience on ConvexClub.

Why mention dollar remedies at all?

Because vague ethics sermons bounce off. Dated SEC press figures mark a bright line: MNPI cases are enforcement, not mentorship content.

Does process journaling replace compliance training?

No. If you work somewhere with MNPI policies, follow those policies and counsel. Our form cannot certify your information hygiene.
